Info:
The Diablo For Peace and Education Committees of the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center have organized a series of events entitled "Addressing Racism In Our Community".
The first in the series included a panel of local representatives from the indigenous Ohlone and Miwok communities. Next up is a presentation by Alyson Reimer, an attorney and Special Assistant to the Director of UC Berkeley's Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. She will speak on "Building the Beloved Community: Addressing Racism Inside the Classroom and Out".
Reimer previously worked as a researcher for the Southern Poverty Law Center and as a law clerk to Founder Morris Dees. Her work includes both legislative advocacy, academic instruction, and consultation in issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Her thoughts: "Race is a little bit like gravity everyone knows it exists, but very few people on earth actually understand its full complexities. Before we can create a true sense of belonging, we need to understand the structural, social, and individual forces that are working against us. We will examine how race and racism in America came to be, and, address what we can do to unlearn and restructure the habits, biases, systems and structures that keep racism in place."
This event is funded in part by a grant from the Walnut Creek Civic Pride Foundation. For more information, please contact the Center office at 925-933-7850.
