Join us for Bats, Bikes, BCycles & Brews on our beautiful Buffalo Bayou!
Houston, where the bayou (not the river) runs through it! We’ve got a lot of B’s going on for this event, if only we had Brad Pitt, too.
As you know by now, even if your new, Buffalo Bayou runs right down the middle of our city. What you may not know is that it’s is home to over a quarter of a million Mexican Free Tail Bats. Yes, Austin isn’t the only cool spot in Texas to get batty! Our bats live under Waugh Street bridge and come out at sunset to dine on our local mosquito population – Eat bats, eat! Thanks to wonderful volunteers and work crews, the paved biking paths on the Bayou have been fully restored, and are clear for us to ride the length of the Bayou from Shepherd Street bridge all the way to downtown and back.
Join Bayou City Outdoors (BCO) as we lead the group for an easy 6 – 8-mile ride stopping for about 30 minutes to watch the bats pour out and then continue downtown for the young at heart! Downtown we’ll park our bikes at a local watering hole and be back to Fonde by 10:30.
If 10:30 is past your bedtime, don’t fret, we’ll ride by our parking lot on the way downtown to drop off all you, larks. No, we’re not calling you a bad word. Apparently, that’s what you call the opposite of a night owl.
Meet at 6:45 PM in the back of the Fonde Community Center’s Parking Lot behind Sabine Lofts along the bayou located at 110 Sabine St, Houston, TX 77007. We will roll out at 7:15pm, so don’t get left behind!
No bike, no problem. Choose a red bike from the BCycles station!
Here’s all the details: - All types of bikes are welcome, however, we’ve found cruisers, hybrids, and mountain bikes make for a little easier city ride. - Bcycles are available around our start – they will sell out so check their site first, or download the “where’s a BCycle app” and pedal over. https://houston.bcycle.com/station-map - Helmets are required (we will have a few loaners for BCO members at the start) - Lights & reflectors are a really, really good idea! -Parking is in Lot H behind the Fonde Center, roughly the corner of Memorial & Sabine Street (110 Sabine St. - We meet at 6:45 and leave at 7:15pm, sharp -The ride is approximately 8+ miles - The path is paved http://buffalobayou.org/visit/.
