Info:
Barefoot Chamber Concerts ("an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality" - San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events.
The first of Barefoot's three contributions to this year's Berkeley Festival Fringe will be a program of the rare and virtuosic repertoire for two bass viols and organ written for the "private music" of England's King Charles I. Both John Jenkins and John Coprario were distinguished viol players, as well as innovative composers, working in an extraordinarily supportive milieu. King Charles loved and played the viol, and spent lavishly on new compositions for the viol to be played by his stable of great players. It was a time of plenty for the viol, such as had never been seen before in England, and the richness of the music reflects that royal patronage.
Hallifax & Jeffrey (viols) and Andrew Canepa (organ) have made a specialty of these pieces, and St. Mark's parish hall is the perfect acoustic for it. If you're not familiar with the music, you'll be astonished. If you know it well, you'll enjoy it even more.
