Chitresh Das Institute presents "Noor - The Path of Light," a collaboration between Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, a leading tabla master of our time, and the Lian Ensemble, the virtuosic Iranian musical group led by Houman Pourmehdi with Pirayeh Pourafar on tar and vocalist Alireza Shahmohamadi, exploring modern connections between two art forms with ancient ties. Chitresh Das Youth Company will open the evening with a kathak performance choreographed by CDI Artistic Director Charlotte Moraga.
Beginning in medieval times, Persian music and dance has had a profound influence on North Indian classical or Hindusthani music and dance. Emerging from multiple cultural, spiritual and religious traditions, both ancient and contemporary, including Hinduism, Islam and Sufism, North Indian classical music is distinctive from Persian music and dance, yet strong resemblances remain. This collaboration is about creating visceral and masterful new music, mining histories, traditions and connections.
"Central to this collaboration is finding common ground while stepping outside of one's comfort zone," explains Chaudhuri. "Experimenting with both the known and unknown guides the process and theme for creating the new work. In the process of creating Noor we also seek to create a deeper and more complex understanding of each culture and artist, bringing forth stories that are rarely heard."
As Pourmehdi says, a consistent theme is finding a sense of home , an idea that is parallel to his life as an Iranian in exile and as an artist: "As Persians we are in exile from our country, as artists we are in exile from society. Working with artists like Swapan Chaudhuri is where I find home."
