SPIRIT AWAKENING FOUNDATION (SAF) presents its annual VOICES OF THE UNHEARD/L.O.V.E spoken word and theatrical performance hosted by Rev. Michael Beckwith at Skirball Cultural Center, Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 7 - 9 p.m. This event features the writings of incarcerated and at-risk children and young adults in the Los Angeles County juvenile justice system.
The powerful, heart-pounding and soul-searching words are written by our most vulnerable youth and performed through song, dance, poetry and storytelling. Many of these children have been deeply wounded, and from their suffering, have begun lashing out. It is our goal to heal these children so they can grow up to better themselves and their communities. With what it takes to incarcerate one child in the juvenile justice system, SAF is able to implement an entire year of holistic programming for 60 students! By amplifying the voices of unheard youth in Los Angeles, we offer them another way to discover who they truly are - and we give the world a chance to understand them and celebrate them. This year, SAF honors longtime Board Member Bertrand Christian Esq., Actor and Comedian Debra Wilson, and The California Wellness Foundation, with CEO Judy Belk.
SAF is a non-profit dedicated to helping youth realize their spiritual identity through meditation, creative writing, improvisation, visual arts and mentorship to build character and raise self-esteem, one child at a time. We are a community of teachers, mentors and philanthropists who help deliver arts-based restorative programs to at-risk and incarcerated youth in the greater Los Angeles area. With programs hailed as "creative, innovative and powerful" by the California State Department of Justice, SAF has been a pioneer in restorative justice and juvenile delinquency prevention.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Showtime begins promptly at 7 p.m. followed by V.I.P reception at 8 p.m.
