SF Performances presents trumpeter Sean Jones, violinist Regina Carter, tenor Nicholas Phan as narrator, and friends for a jazz-inflected performance of Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale).
Igor Stravinsky's hybrid theatrical work created on the eve of Europe's Jazz Age, was first performed on this same date in 1918. Based on a Russian folktale about the choice between greed and happiness, L'Histoire features seven instruments and a narrator that tell the story of an AWOL soldier's encounter with the devil.
L'Histoire du Soldat is now regarded as one of the most important and influential chamber works of the early twentieth century. It's popularity at the time of composition was sadly diminished for although Stravinsky had considerable financial backing from a wealthy patron who funded the premiere of the work, the bookings for the tour of the piece were all canceled due to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.
This performance is also part of SF Performances' 39th Gala. The Gala includes a pre-concert cocktail reception (6pm), the concert (7pm), and post-concert dinner (8pm) in the Green Room of the Veteran's Building. Proceeds benefit SF Performances' education programs.Tickets start at $500.
