The theme for the 7th conference is "Building Bridges Not Walls" and features speakers and interactive workshops to provide both educators, community members, activists and students with tools and resources for enhancing peace, understanding, and communication in their schools and daily lives.
Keynote Speaker: LAUREN MARKHAM, Author and Community School Program Manager, Oakland International High School. She has worked in support of refugees, immigrants and vulnerable youth, with a focus on the intersection between education and migration, serving as a caseworker and a resettlement capacity worker for several organizations both nationwide and internationally.
Her book, The Faraway Brothers, Two Young Migrants and the Making of an American Life, is based on the true story of a set of twins escaping poverty and gang violence in El Salvador. Markham met them at the high school where she works as a refugee coordinator and through this book offers an unforgettable testament to the migrant experience.
Breakout session topic strands include: Mindfulness, Peace Through Expression, Elementary Education and Building Bridges. The conference is for everyone who works with youth, grades K-12: parents, teachers, administrators, classroom aides, school personnel and students.
Morning refreshments and a catered lunch are included. Register online. CEUs will be available for an additional fee.
