Info:
Explore the full range of modern orchestral sound, from the lush, early twentieth century romanticism of Strauss' Die Rosenkavalier and impressionism of Debussy's Nocturnes to the jazz-inflected twenty-first century music of Chris Brubeck, featuring New York Philharmonic bass trombonist George Curran. Music Director Barbara Yahr and Assistant Conductor Eric Mahl share the podium. Reception afterwards.
George Curran has been bass trombonist of the New York Philharmonic since 2013. Prior to that, he was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a fellow with the New World Symphony. Recent recording projects include Roadwork with Atlanta Trombone Project, which resulted in the formation of the Southeast Trombone Symposium summer workshop at Columbus State U A Beautiful Noise with the CSU Trombone Choir Vital Signs, a full length solo CD with works by Gillingham, Gershwin, Bourgeois, Pierce, and Verhelst, and Legacy, with members of the Southeast Trombone Symposium, on which Curran is featured prominently throughout. As a soloist, Curran has premiered several new works written for him, most importantly Vital Signs of the Earth by David Gillingham. He is on the faculty of Rutgers University, Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes School of Music.
Grammy-nominated composer Chris Brubeck has written several band pieces, chamber pieces, 3 concertos for trombone, a trombone quartet, and concertos for stringed instruments and other ensembles. He maintains a demanding touring and recording schedule with the Brubeck Brothers Quartet and with Triple Play, an acoustic jazz-funk-blues-Americana trio, as well as soloing in his trombone concertos with orchestras worldwide. He has served as Artist in Residence with orchestras and colleges in America, coaching, lecturing, and performing with students and faculty. He was a long-standing member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, writing arrangements and touring and recording with his father's group for over 20 years.
