Info:
Providence ElderPlace will host an event featuring nurse and author Rosalys Peel, whose book "Mike & Me" outlines how couples can work and stay together when facing Alzheimer's Disease. The book, a National Book of the Year finalist, is bringing new hope and inspiration to Alzheimer's couples across the country.
When her husband Mike was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, Rosalys made a deal with him that together they vowed that they would manage Alzheimer's Disease in their own home and continue to live as normally as possible for as long as possible. Over the next 10 years they found new ways to defy and surpass virtually all the typical Alzheimer's statistics. Despite Mike's illness they pursued their dreams, traveled the world, helped raise their granddaughter, maintained their romance, kept Mike on his feet, and found new ways to communicate with their friends, family and each other. They also saved thousands of dollars by doing it in the familiar surroundings of their own home. Through it all Rosalys, a nurse and parent educator at Swedish Medical Center, kept a journal of their discoveries and eventually wrote "Mike & Me" as a new kind of guidebook for other Alzheimer's couples, caregivers and families.
Rosalys will talk about her book at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. In between her talks, event attendees can tour the Providence ElderPlace geriatric clinic/adult day health center, meet with other Alzheimer's Disease experts and providers who will be on site, and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
