Info:
Jeanette Lewicki, singer and accordionist, leads a world tour of Yiddish song. From the shtetls of Poland, to the sunny boulevards of Odessa by steamer ship to Athens and Istanbul by railway from Buenos Aires to Brooklyn, Yiddish song has traveled the world. We carry the songs wherever we go and the songs carry us: They remind us of life in the old country and hope in the new world. The voices of those who came before us-children, mothers, theatre stars, workers, soldiers, gangsters, lovers-live on in the songs, as long as they are sung.
Jeanette Lewicki's devotion to Yiddish song has led her to work with some of the foremost klezmer musicians and Yiddishists of our time, including Brave Old World, the Klezmatics, Arkady Gendler and Michael Alpert. She has produced numerous recordings, sung at a thousand weddings, coached Michael Tilson Thomas in Yiddish and helped digitize the complete Ruth Rubin collection at YIVO NY.
Daytime Adult Learning and Culture Programs are made possible in part by the John R. Schwabacher Family as well as a grant from the Maimonides Fund at the Jewish Community Federation & Endowment Fund of San Francisco, The Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties. We are grateful for their generous support.
