LYRIC THEATRE, in our 45th year of high quality live musical theater productions, offers a classic by the most famous musical theater duo of England, WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.
Fully staged, with orchestra and subtitles. Free pre-show talks one hour before curtain.
The Gondoliers was Gilbert and Sullivan's last great success. By setting the work comfortably far away from England, in Venice, Gilbert was emboldened to sharpen his satire at the nobility and the monarchy itself, making for sparkling humor we can still enjoy today. And the libretto inspired Sullivan to write some of his brightest and most melodic music.
Synopsis: Venetian gondoliers Marco and Giuseppe marry contadine Gianetta and Tessa, then learn that one of them is the King of Barataria and was married as a baby to Casilda, the daughter of the Duke of Plaza-Toro. The only problem is, no one in Venice knows which of them is the King. Whichever it is, his life is further complicated by having two wives.
The only person who knows is Inez, and she is in Barataria. Until she can identify the real King, the two travel to Barataria to reign as joint Kings. But to avoid any impropriety, they have to leave their new wives in Venice...
