The second of LIEDER ALIVE!'s trio of concerts by Merola Opera Program alumni features baritone Eugene Villanueva (joining us just after closing San Francisco Opera's run of Billy Budd) and our esteemed Artist-in-Residence pianist Peter Grunberg. Eugene, the only American recipient of the prestigious Tosti song prize, and Peter have together moved and delighted LIEDER ALIVE! audiences in two previous seasons.
This time, the duo brings us some of the same beloved composers including songs from Schubert's Winterreise and a collection of sparkling Tosti melodies. Mahler's ravishing Urlicht (Primal Light) - the transcendent core of Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony - is the chosen title piece of this program.
