Anna Maria Mendieta's "Tango del Cielo" (Tango from Heaven) comes to the Firehouse Arts Center Theater in Pleasanton for two performances: Saturday, September 21 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday afternoon September 22 at 2:00 p.m. The unique multimedia concert-show features Argentine Tango, Flamenco, Spanish Classical and Latin Jazz with harp, strings, percussion and dance.
The passion of Tango meets the romance of the harp in an ethereal blend, incorporating multi-media use of film, art, theatrical sets and effects. The concert-show is appropriate for audiences of all ages.
Harpist Anna Maria Mendieta's stunning program leads audiences through the smoky cafes of Argentina, the bull fights of Spain, and the jungles of South America via the dramatic and fiery Spanish compositions of De Falla, Granados, and Rodrigo, as well as the passionately sensuous tangos of Astor Piazzolla. Special musical arrangements are by multiple-Grammy Award-winning tango master Pablo Ziegler, who just won another Grammy in 2018 for Best Latin Jazz Album.
Speaking of awards, the performers are all award-winners in their genres: the tango dancer is the 2-time National Champion of Argentine Tango the tango couple is featured on Dancing With the Stars for multiple seasons one of the Flamenco dancers was last year's finalist in NBC's World of Dance and the other was featured at the World Expo in Spain, and the musicians are competition winners and principal players with top orchestras.
Anna Maria Mendieta notes: "Many of the famous tangos we know today were composed for movies like "Zorro" with Douglas Fairbanks & Lupe Valez, and the films of Rudolph Valentino & Nita Naldi (my ancestor). Tango Del Cielo connects history with the present, tradition with innovation."
Mendieta's latest album is currently in recording sessions at Skywalker Sound, and will be the first of its kind featuring Argentine Tango music for harp and orchestra.
