Two Latinx sisters land the opportunity to remodel and sell their historic family home on a popular reality television show, but their dream quickly transforms into something else. 'Dream Hou$e' is a dark comedy with a twist that explores gentrification, family, and the bonds of sisterhood.
Playwright Eliana Pipes was inspired by her own upbringing to explore the themes of family legacy, and what a connection to the land means. "I was born and raised in a changing Los Angeles, in a little pocket of the city that was really gentrifying as I grew up. When I was 13, we sold our house, and my family moved. Our house had tripled in value, and that move really changed my family's financial future for the better. But, it also meant that my family was participating in that process of gentrification. That move constituted a cultural loss.
'Dream Hou$e,' the third mainstage production in Shotgun Players' 30th Anniversary Season, will be presented live and in-person on the Ashby Stage beginning July 9 and running through August 7, 2022. In addition to our live, in-person performances, we are also pleased to offer two live-stream performances on July 21 and July 28, 2022. We're also offering a video-on-demand August 3 through August 14. We're working with Berkeley Community Media to provide a high-definition, cinema-quality experience for those audience members who would prefer to enjoy 'Dream Hou$e' and support the Shotgun Players from the comfort of their own homes.
We're also proud to offer a special haptic tour and performance for blind and low vision patrons on Sunday, July 24. We've partnered with Gravity Access to offer a haptic tour at 3:30pm, followed by the performance at 5 pm. For further accessibility, a video-on-demand with closed captioning available will also be available August 3 through August 14, 2022.
