Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out, this four-week workshop invites you to turn your journeys-both near and far-into vivid, engaging narrative nonfiction. We'll explore how to keep meaningful travel records, conduct place-based research, and shape your experiences into stories that resonate with readers.

Through weekly writing prompts, craft discussions, and close readings of published travel writing, you'll develop skills in narrative voice, scene-building, ethical storytelling, and revision. We'll also discuss audience, markets, and how to sustain your writing practice beyond the class.

Each session is designed to be generative, with optional opportunities to share your work and receive on-the-spot feedback in a supportive environment. Whether you're drawn to landscapes, city streets, or everyday meanderings, you'll leave with practical tools and a stronger sense of your voice on the page.

A highlight of the course will be weekly "Leslie & Friends" master classes where we learn from some of the Bay Area's most exciting writers.

Prerequisite: None. Students must be 18+ years or older at the start of the class.

Bring to first class: A brief personal bio, a notebook and pen, and a laptop or iPad for in-class assignments.

Instructor bio: Leslie Carol Roberts is an award-winning journalist and writer and the first Fulbright Fellow in the world in the Antarctic Humanities. She has published two books to date, The Entire Earth and Sky: Views on Antarctica, and Here Is Where I Walk: Views from the Forest. She is at work on a novel (2026) and a series of essays on travel (2027.)
