The Hewitt Collection, one of the most important and comprehensive collections of African-American art created during this century, comes to the BMA this summer. The exhibition features fifty-five paintings and works on paper by twenty renowned artists whose works can also be found in the BMA's collection, including Romare Bearden, John T. Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Henry O. Tanner, and Hale Woodruff. Collected over fifty years by John and Vivan Hewitt, a teacher and librarian with an eye for fine art and emerging artists, the collection was purchased by Bank of America in 1998.
