The 5th Annual ALS H.O.P.E. Race/Walk is organized by the Physical Therapy Class of 2006 at the Medical University of SC.
ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neuromuscular disorder that affects motor neurons (large nerve cells and their axons that reach from the brain to the spinal cord and muscles throughout the body). Lou Gehrig, the famous baseball player, was diagnosed with ALS, which is commonly referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” As the disease progresses, voluntary muscle movements are affected, with total paralysis occurring in the later stages however, the person’s mind and ability to think remains unaffected. For more information about ALS, please contact the ALS Association or the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, which serves SC and NC
