  Everyone knows somebody touched by Lupus, so what is lupus?

Lupus is an acute and chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system is unbalanced, causing inflammation and tissue damage to virtually any organ system in the body including the lungs, heart, kidney and brain. It is a significant, life-diminishing disease that affects an estimated 60,000 Georgians and 1.5 million Americans have some form of lupus-enough people to fill 30 baseball stadiums. Its health effects include seizures, strokes, heart attacks, miscarriages and kidney failure. Ninety percent of the people with lupus are women however men and children develop the disease. Although many men and women are affected by lupus, for some reason African American, Hispanic/Latinas, Asians, and Native Americans are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop lupus yet, 80% of women say they have little or no knowledge of lupus. There have been no new drugs approved by the FDA for the treatment of lupus in 51 years – this occurred during the Eisenhower Administration. Currently, there are several drugs in the process but at this time there is no known cure or drug that exclusively treats lupus.

This event is for riders and non-riders to raise awareness about Lupus. Proceeds will benefit individuals living with lupus. Registration begins at 9:30am and kickstands up at 11:00am. $20 per rider. Pre-registration is preferred at www.laceslupus.com. Ride will begin in Lithonia and end at the HD Dealership in Lithia Springs. A special presentation to bikers will be sponsored by State Representative Toney Collins.
