Featuring: Carlos Oliveira, seven-string guitar and compositions Sonia Caltvedt, flute Rebecca Kleinmann, flute Fabio Reis, percussion Brian Rice, percussion
Kata-Vento features new original music of guitarist and composer Carlos Oliveira, written for the unique instrumentation of guitar, percussion and double flutes. Often evocative of music of the pifano, the rustic bamboo flute of northeastern Brazil, the sound also delves into realms of Jazz, Samba, Maracatu, Choro, and "Cholypso." The listener will undoubtedly enjoy a journey through traditional Brazilian rhythms infused with Oliveira's sophisticated harmonic concepts and sense of humor.
Says Oliveira, "When Rebecca told me she was moving to the Bay Area, I knew it was time to start the Kata-vento project. "Catavento" means wind-catcher in Portugeuse. For many years, I've wanted to write music for two flutes and percussion inspired by the pifano music of my homeland, Brazil. After 30 years of performing in America, my ideas are being brought to life in the form of a beautiful, airy sound. Thank you for sharing this exciting moment with me..."
