Info:
CubanaBooks, the Center for the Art of Translation, and Litquake SF present an in-person reading from two Cuban women authors, as they celebrate the first English translations of their respective works published through Cubanabooks. Mirta Yanez and Nancy Alonso (photo, right) will share readings from Yanez's "Havana is a Really Big City" and Alonso's "Disconnect/Desencuentro." Audience Q and A follows the reading.
The evening also features a live performance by the Azucar Triothree members from Azucar Con Ache, an effervescent all-woman, Bay Area-based salsa and latin jazz ensemble.
Don't miss this special opportunity to hear two accomplished Cuban women authors and some raucous Latin rhythm!!
(Presentation in Spanish, with English translation and interpretation provided). - About the authors and books:
Disconnect by Nancy Alonso is a collection of short stories that speaks to multiple audiences regarding the emerging feminist and LGBT communities in Cuban culture. As a creative insight into a highly restricted culture, Disconnect breaks down borders and transcends language barriers.
MIRTA YANEZ -HAVANA IS A REALLY BIG CITY
Mirta Yanez is a Havana-born poet, novelist, critic, and extraordinary writer of short fiction. Her narrative stands out by virtue of a complex yet unmistakable Cuban flavor and a characteristic preoccupation with the social, political, and economic particularities of the island and how these affect los cubanos. Themes of class, race, gender, and sexuality are artfully interwoven in humorous and poignant narratives that make the reader pause to rethink her/his views or assumptions about Cuba and about life. This groundbreaking collection of her work, most of which is available for the first time in English translation.
