‘Day of the Diva’ to raise funds for rape survivor healthcare bill



CLEVELAND – Personal empowerment is the theme of an upcoming event that aims to raise funds to help pass Ohio House Bill 560, the Compassionate Care for Rape Emergencies (CARE) Bill, that would make it the standard of care for hospital emergency rooms to offer emergency contraception and prophylactic treatment of sexually transmitted infections to victims of sexual assault, without regard to the victim’s ability to pay.



In their latest effort to inform the community about the bill, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio and the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center will host Day of the Diva on Sunday, June 13, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West 78th Street Studios, 1300 West 78th Street in the Detroit-Shoreway Neighborhood. Described as a day of pampering, Diva will offer musical performances, brunch, personal care services such as manicures and massages, and more.



“At its heart, Day of the Diva is a celebration of women, and the people that love and support them” said Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL. “Through it we hope to raise an awareness of the CARE Bill and energize supporters of both organizations to take action.”



And perhaps a fun day full of good cheer is what’s needed to fuel activists in the push to pass the CARE bill.



In Ohio, nearly one quarter of hospitals don’t guarantee access to life-saving treatments, according to recent studies by NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio.



Critical parts of the CARE Bill include the provision of immediate treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, as well as the option to take emergency contraception if the victim requests it. Emergency contraception, falsely referred to as an “abortion drug,” can keep a sexual assault victim from becoming pregnant up to 72 hours after being attacked.



Tickets for Day of the Diva are $50/person or $85/couple. The cost includes brunch, mimosa tickets, special discounts and incentives from local retailers, music, entertainment, all beauty services, and a gift bag. Diva will be a family-friendly event children 12 and under can attend for free. Organizers stress that men are welcome to attend as well.
