AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOLARS CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY IN KENYA
Nairobi…. 15 February 2011 Black History Month established in 1976 – now celebrated nationally and internationally in February – is the fruitful vision of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, founder of the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. Part of the aim of Black History is to recognize significant contributions to society made by people with African heritage. This year’s theme is “African Americans and the Civil War.”
Paa Ya Paa Arts Centre celebrates with a host of activities and special Black History film showings at different venues, followed with Q&A discussions with African American Scholars, Counselor Alphonso Gaskins, Washington, D.C. Mrs. Danielle Stoudymire-Wakaba, NYC Mrs. Beverle Lax, San Mateo, Ca and IFESH/Teachers for Africa volunteers , Dr. Willie Butler, Tallahassee, Florida Dr. Karen Davidson, Jackson Mississippi and Dr. Dashanaba King-Agbenoo, Atlanta, Ga. Sponsored by Paa Ya Paa Arts Centre, Friends of Paa Ya Paa and The American Embassy, movie viewings are open to the public. Saturday 26 February Ridgeways Baptist Church 6:30pm
Screening: “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: A Historical Perspective”

Sunday 27 February Village Market Theatre 9:00am
Screening: “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Historical Perspective”
A staunch advocate of peaceful resistance to injustice and racial violence, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood at the vortex of the U.S. civil rights movement of the 1960s. He became a national leader, and his death at the hands of an assassin in 1968 was grieved by both blacks and whites. In this award-winning documentary, writer/director Thomas Friedman takes a look Reverend King’s ideas, actions, and influence on the fight to end racial segregation. Narrated by Arthur Berghardt, the program’s highlights include rare archival footage, photographs, and interviews with King associates.

Sunday 27 February Paa Ya Paa Arts Centre 1:00 – 2:45pm
Screening: “Soundtrack for a Revolution” tells the story of the American civil rights movement through its powerful music –the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. The film features new performances of the freedom songs by top artists, including John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean, and The Roots riveting archival footage and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers and leaders, including Congressman John Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Julian Bond, and Ambassador Andrew Young

Screening: “Neshoba: The Price of Freedom” tells the story of a Mississippi town still divided about the meaning of justice, 40 years after the murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner. In the summer of 1964, these three young men, two whites from New York and a black from Mississippi — went to Philadelphia, a small town in the heart of Neshoba County, to register black voters and investigate a church burning. When their bodies were found 44 days later buried beneath an earthen dam, many people rationalized the men came looking for trouble and got what they deserved.
