Article / Content Text:

The seventh annual Oscar Thomas Memorial Exhibition opened on April 3, 2007, at the Amadlozi Gallery of the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center on Martin Luther King Jr.Blvd., in Liberty City of the City of Miami Florida. This art exhibition is one of the finest art exhibitions in the City of Miami, showcasing new works from Florida and the African Diaspora. I as one of the newest members of The Kuumba Artists Collective of South Florida took my first trip and participation from Jacksonville to Miami to see first hand, what this remarkable event was all about.

When I arrived in Liberty City on April 2, 2007, I immediately went to the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. I was mesmerized by its architecture and African decor. The entire structure looks as though every inch of the complex was designed to be the city's African American cultural Icon. Its ocean and sapphire blue color stand as a tropical pyramid against the Caribbean azure sky. The bustling African American community is everywhere in Liberty. I was also mesmerized by the giant Ficus trees which are present there.

The opening was spectacular. A grand buffet of foods, liquids and serenading Live traditional African music, played with traditional instruments by musician Madafo Lloyd Wilson. As the evening progressed many of the artists began to enter. This is one of the best and historical venues in the City of Miami. With a well secure and climate controlled gallery the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center lends it presents as to being one of the top African American attractions in Miami.

At this year's exhibition the Kuumba Artists Collective members included were: Gail Coachman-Alexander. Altine, Rickie Bramble, Joshua Bullard, Phillip Curtis, Damani Diop, Edleen Gelin, Jean Herbert, HUGEAUX, Charles E. Humes Jr., Lucius King, Sr., Marc-Arthur Jean Louis, Kimberly P. McHenry, William Mathews Sr, Donald McKnight, Robert McKnight, Nzingah Oniwosan, Addonis Parker, Wanda Paulette, Angelo Rauls, Nana Sakyi, Jude Paploko Thegenius, Fred Thomas, Dinizulu Gene Tinnie, Bobby Tucker, Darren Watson and Barbara Wilson.
The African American and Haitian community was in GREAT STRENGTH

One place of my early upbringings was in a suburb in Miami called Richmond Heights. This is were I stayed with close family friends during my visit. I made an early morning visit to Key West on April 3, 2007, to photograph the African American community of Key West. Florida. I was surprised to know that not only myself, but famed artist Robert McKnight is from Richmond Heights. Robert enlightened me about other national artists also coming from Richmond Heights.

The annual Oscar Thomas Memorial Exhibition at the Amadlozi Gallery of the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center on Martin Luther King Jr.Blvd., in Liberty City of the City of Miami Florida, is truly a landmark Cultural annual event whose power has caught the interest of an International audience.

At the end of the night artists Hugeaux, Altine, Robert McKnight, Lucius King and Dinizulu Gene Tinnie seat in the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center auditorium and had a meeting of the minds. This was truly a historical event. As the libations stirred, we began to listen to one another. Celebrations, joys, accomplishments and the future we on verbal palette. Laughter rang out from all of us as we ancestral-ized our spirits with unity. The only regret of this visit was that I wished a stenographer was present to document our thoughts.

The seventh annual Oscar Thomas Memorial Exhibition is on exhibit from April 3, 2007 through May 21, 2007, at the Amadlozi Gallery of the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center on Martin Luther King Jr.Blvd., in Liberty City of the City of Miami Florida.
