Org Synopsis 

The Research Oncology Training Program (ROTP) is an intensive cancer research experience, which prepares predoctoral and postdoctoral participants for investigative careers in cancer research.

Predoctoral graduate training emphasizes cancer research underneath the umbrella programs of the Case Biomedical Science Training Program for the PhD degree and the Case Medical Scientist Training Program for the combined MD and PhD degrees. Trainees conduct thesis research under the guidance of Cancer Center faculty in the PhD degree-granting program of Pathology through the Cancer Biology Training Program (CBTP) track. The CBTP trains PhD and MD/PhD scientists who will advance basic and translational research on the causes, diagnosis, progression and treatment of experimental and human cancer. While the ROTP supports predoctoral trainees on a National Cancer Institute (NCI) T32 training grant for a minimum of two years, predoctoral trainees receive a stipend and full tuition remission during their entire predoctoral training period.

Postdoctoral training integrates basic science under the direction of Cancer Center faculty who apply multidisciplinary approaches to fundamental problems in oncology. Recent PhD or MD/PhD degree recipients may apply for postdoctoral cancer research training available in the laboratories of accomplished scientists who are members of the NCI-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Postdoctoral trainees receive financial support from an NCI T32 training grant.

Laboratory research by training program faculty focuses on fundamental questions of immediate relevance to cancer biology and treatment. ROTP trainees engage in both basic science and translational research in the field of cancer biology. The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center provides high-end instrumentation and resources in its numerous sponsored core facilities, therefore serving as a gateway for training in sophisticated technologies that are essential for any modern program of cancer research.
