Org Name:

Foundation for Women

Org Synopsis

The Foundation for Women is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that strives to continually support and encourage impoverished women, both locally and globally, by funding and creating microcredit programs that help generate sustainable income and create economic prosperity.

The organization is currently operating microcredit programs in two regions FFW USA Microcredit Program, with a pilot in San Diego, and FFW Liberia in Africa.

Since the Foundation for Women's establishment in 1997, our organization has supplied eligible women with microcredit loans, as well as motivational programs.

These programs educate all participants about financial and business management in which the participants come together to learn and support each other in their ventures. By giving women loans that help them put their dreams into action, the microcredit programs not only inspire the women but instill a sense of pride in their work and communities. Loans are funded through individual contributions, memberships, grants and corporate donations. The Foundation for Women is committed to helping women accomplish their dreams and fulfill their potential.

Whether women use their loans to sell handcrafted merchandise or to buy and resell goods, each loan puts them one step closer to success and gives them a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

The majority of FFW USA Microcredit Program borrowers are single mothers. According to 2000 US Census Bureau data, San Diego County has 78,423 households headed by single mothers, of which 29% are living below the poverty line.

FFW USA Microcredit Program establishes loan groups in the poorest communities of the region, often those where refugee and immigrant women have settled. San Diego County has been designated by the California Department of Social Services as a "Refugee Impacted County" and is home to significant populations of refugees and immigrants from East Africa, Southeast Asia, South and Central America and Mexico. Through its partner agencies that serve these communities, the Foundation for Women receives referrals for potential borrowers.

In order for the Foundation for Women to succeed in granting impoverished women microcredit loans, our organization is heavily dependent on the generosity and involvement of our communities. Our foundation provides a number of ways for interested community members to get involved in the fight to alleviate poverty among women, including coffee purchases, hosting parties, volunteering, donations, and spreading the word.

Each and every contribution to the Foundation for Women results in a woman's dreams becoming closer to reality.
