This workshop can help free us from the ways we get stuck: the binds of intimate interpersonal relationships, frustrations at work, confusions about our life`s journey, and obstacles to our emotional growth and spiritual development.
Led by Georgetown Medical School professor James S. Gordon, we learn a model for getting unstuck that has been used by people of all ages and cultures for more than 40 years. Outlined in his new book Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven Stage Journey Out of Depression, this model has been shown in scientific studies to reduce stress and improve mood, decrease anger and resentment, enhance professional competence, and promote optimism, hope, and connection.
Through words, drawing, and movement several kinds of meditation (quiet and active) guided imagery and written dialogues and group sharing, we learn to resolve dilemmas and find answers to questions that have stymied us.
This workshop is equally useful for people who want to discover and experience their own potential and for professionals who would like to use this approach with clients.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the evidence for the critical role of stress in producing depression.
- Describe the controversy surrounding the use of antidepressant drugs, and the pros and cons of using antidepressant drugs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of exercise and mind-body techniques such as meditation, guided imagery and self-expression as treatments for depression.
- Assess the applicability of a model which conceives of depression as the beginning of a journey.
- Integrate mind-body and expressive techniques, included guided imagery, written exercises and drawings, into comprehensive, therapeutic programs for depressed patients.
- CE and CME are available and included in the tuition.
