Atlanta Celebrates the Legacy of Outgoing Mayor Bill Campbell

Atlanta, GA - (December 30, 2001) - Approximately one thousand friends and supporters of outgoing Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell joined a celebration last night at City Hall.  The event was co-hosted by the Atlanta Development Authority and the National Black MBA Association – Atlanta Chapter.

Mayor Campbell has rendered 20 years of public service to the City of Atlanta, twelve as Councilperson and eight as Mayor.  During his tenure, he is widely credited with improved public housing and increased affordable housing.

Many at the event praised the economic development and downtown revitalization that occurred on Campbell’s watch.  In the last eight years, the city has benefited from new sports and family entertainment complexes, operating the busiest airport in the world; and hosting the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.

Under his leadership, the City of Atlanta successfully defended, in court, its Affirmative Action Program and its litigation for safety features on guns.  He is an advocate for workplace diversity.  In an effort to close the digital divide, twelve Cyber Centers were opened in neighborhoods.  More than 7000 individuals, including seniors, have been trained in the use of computers as of December 2001.

“Dr. King taught us that everyone can be great,” said Campbell, “because every one of us can serve.  I will always continue in the future to provide service to this great city.”  Campbell praised many who served with him during his two terms and those in the city who gave him constructive criticism.
