New York, NY — Alpha International Travel, a minority-owned, full-service travel agency, has been in business since 1992.  The company, based in New York City, serves clients all over the country and has overseas customers as well.

"There was a need and we filled it.  Corporate and individual travelers were not getting the service and prices that they deserve," said Colin Hall, President of Alpha International Travel.   This was especially true for minority travelers."

When minorities utilize high quality services like Alpha International Travel, it is not just good business for Hall's company alone.  "As minorities, we spend a lot of our dollars in other communities," Hall continued.  "It is crucial that we recycle dollars within our own community.  It can be done in spite of the hurdles that I and other minority entrepreneurs often face.  We can overcome the 'old boy network', and even the so-called 'crab mentality' within our own community."

Minority entrepreneurs are often asked to prove themselves by their own people, and in many cases questioned and challenged beyond what is faced by Caucasian small business people.

According to Hall, the keys to his success include client education, one-stop shopping, and a personal touch.  His company's priority is to provide the best prices without compromising service.  The company has gross revenues of roughly $5 million annually, though Hall believes his agency has plenty of room to grow.  "Perseverance will be needed as we pursue win-win joint venture opportunities with the larger agencies.  This will allow us to take Alpha International Travel to the next level.  None of the so-called mega agencies can target and service small minority companies and minority professional organizations the way we can."

In short, the story of Alpha International Travel is a series of great lessons for small minority businesses in any product category:  People do business with people that they like.  Being an entrepreneur is a 24 hour / 7 day per week job.  Always have a marketing orientation, always look for opportunities to network, stay focused, persevere, and close out commitments cleanly.
