Seeking a dynamic seasonal intern to assist with research and monitoring initiatives on the Hudson River during the summer of 2024. This intern will work alongside the research team in the field and laboratory while building a valuable early-career environmental skillset.
This intern will assist in conducting long-term research and monitoring on Estuary habitats, including freshwater tidal emergent marshes and beds of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). The intern will:
Provide support with calibration, deployment, and maintenance of data loggers.
Collection of water samples and field data.
Support wet chemistry procedures in the lab, including vacuum filtration, sample preparation, chemical analysis, and preparation of standards, chemicals, and reagents.
For all tasks, ample training will be provided. The successful candidate will be familiar with water quality sampling and analytical procedures, with an ability to carefully follow rigorous protocols and a focus on safety. The ability to physically navigate natural and aquatic environments and lift up to 50lbs would be required. Experience operating off-road vehicles and small watercraft will be beneficial. Highly motivated individuals with knowledge of biological, chemical, and physical water quality indicators are encouraged to apply.
The anticipated hourly payrate is $19. This internship supports the 2024 field season, with a start date no earlier than April 1, 2024, and an end date no later than December 29, 2024, and is based out of Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, NY. The goal is to fill this position with the most competitive candidate as a Crime Scene Investigator 1 (CSI 1) or Crime Scene Investigator 2 (CSI 2) based on the chosen candidate's level of experience. The Crime Scene Investigator 1 is a specialized and highly trained professional responsible for conducting thorough investigations of crime scenes. They work under the direction of more senior investigators, such as Crime Scene Investigator 2s and detectives, to identify, preserve, and analyze evidence. As a key member of the investigative team, the Crime Scene Investigator 1 must apply a variety of specialized techniques to collect, preserve, and identify evidence at crime scenes and within the laboratory. In addition to their fieldwork, Crime Scene Investigators must possess strong analytical skills to interpret and evaluate evidence in the laboratory. They must also be able to communicate their findings effectively in a court of law, providing expert testimony on the methods and results of their processes and analysis. The Crime Scene Investigator 1 is part of a promotional path. Incumbents in the Crime Scene Investigator 1 classification will be promoted to the Crime Scene Investigator 2 classification upon satisfactory completion of an approved promotional plan, which includes obtaining certifications outlined below within two and a half years (30 months) of hire. The Crime Scene Investigator 2 is a highly trained and specialized professional responsible for conducting scientific investigations involving the identification, preservation, and analysis of trace evidence. In addition, they are trained in latent print examination and comparison. As a key member of the investigative team, Crime Scene Investigator 2s perform a variety of complex and specialized tasks to collect, preserve, and identify criminal evidence at crime scenes, as well as analyze evidence in the laboratory. To be a Crime Scene Investigator 2, incumbents must possess specialized training and certifications in forensic science, and must have demonstrated proficiency in the use of advanced analytical techniques and tools. They must be able to provide expert testimony in court on their methods and the results of their analysis. The Crime Scene Investigator 2 role differs from the Crime Scene Investigator 1, which does not require the same level of specialized training and certifications upon hire. IMPORTANT INFORMATION This is not a sworn position but does require a complete Statement of Personal History (SPH). Only those applicants selected will need to submit the SPH.
